Report on Movie Screening "MATRUBHOOMI"

On 29th September 2011, screening of the movie “MATRUBHOOMI” was held in Seminar Hall of Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi by the members of the Gender Sensitization Sub-Group, Legal Aid Society.

Matrubhoomi:A Nation without Women, was released in 2003, written and directed by Manish Jha. The film showcase the impact of female foeticide and female infanticide on the gender imbalance, and consequently depicts the pathetic situation of women in society. Its storyline bears resemblance to real-life instances of gender imbalance and economics resulting in fraternal polyandry and bride buying in some parts of India.  It depicts a future dystopia in an Indian village populated exclusively by males due to female infanticide over the years.

The film received widespread critical acclaim and was shown at the film festivals through 2003, including the 2003 Venice Film Festival, where it was presented in the Critic's Week (Parallel Sections) and later awarded the FIPRESCI Award "For it's important theme on women's issues and female infanticide handled with sensitivity by a first-time director"

On the basis of the issues raised in the movie namely, FEMALE FOETICIDE and FEMALE FANTICIDE some facts are presented along with cases and laws prevailing:

"Female infanticide is the intentional killing of baby girls due to the preference for male babies and from the low value associated with the birth of females."

Mainly after two world wars the numbers of female foeticides are growing at alarming speed. India has more female foeticides as cases filed in India, Its 416 in December 2007 according to the PNDT Act.

About 5-7 lakh girls a year or 2000 girls a day go missing in India due to female foeticide. The child sex ratio for the age group of 0-6 years has currently 927 per 1000 boys. Punjab has 798 girls, Haryana 819, Delhi 868 and Gujrat 883 per 1000 boys.

Female Foeticide cases
In June 2007, a doctor was arrested on illegally aborting 260 female foetuses after police recovered bones & skulls from a septic tank in a maternity clinic in New Delhi.

On July 23, 2007 Nayagarh District (Odisha) police had discovered 40 dead female infants in a dry well near a private clinic & within one month again from Bhubaneswar police got 30 foeticides in 15 jars near the Forest Park. The only reason of these issues is discrimination between male & female.

From official record it has estimated that in India everyday 7000 female foeticides has taken place. Shocking statistics reveal that as many as 10 million girls in India have been killed by their parents either before or immediately after birth over the past 20 years.

MTP Act, 1971

The Maternal Terminal of Pregnancy, Act or the MTP Act was came into force in 1971. This was the first law to regulate the termination of pregnancy. Thus otherwise the termination of pregnancy has been legalized. According to this Act, if the pregnancy would involve a risk to life of pregnant women or cause grave injury/physical or mental misbalance of the foetus, in that case she can go for abortion.

PNDT Act, 1994

To check the practice of determination of sex before birth of a child is illegal in the eyes of law, according to the Prenatal Diagnostic test Act, 1994. According to the new Law, the person who disobey the PNDT Act, the penalty which at present between 10,000 to 1 lakh is being enhanced to anywhere between Rs.3 to 7 lakh.

POSITION IN INDIA

Sex-selective abortion has been seen as worsening the sex ratio in India, affecting gender issues related to sex compositions of Indian households. According to the decennial Indian census, the sex ratio in the 0-6 age group in India went from 104.0 males per 100 females in 1981, to 105.8  in 1991, to 107.8  in 2001, to 109.4  in 2011. The ratio is significantly higher in certain states such as Punjab and Haryana (126.1 and 122.0, as of 2001).

  1. Nice Article...

The way "Matrubhoomi" has shown the issue, was marvelous. Actually our society has to understand that," Woman is not a commodity, they are human like everyone else, The creator, The energy of universe... Without her nothing is complete."

We have to believe in equality of every person irrespective of Gender.

May be some of the people of society take narrow view or one sided view, some may take it as the fiction, but we have to see the inherent problem of society, which is depicted in the Movie in a subtle way.

My view on the whole movie is one and only... we have to understand, relate to present and solve those problem of current society.
