CONFERENCE REPORT: Legal Aid: Catalyst for Social Change


At the beginning of the conference Hon’ble Justice S. Muralidhar graced the dais and was greeted by Prof. Gurdip Singh, Dean, Faculty of Law. Prof. Gurdip Singh welcomed all the delegates and paper presenters to the brainstorming, intellectually stimulating technical sessions. He harped on the various national and international conventions which provide for legal aid to the needy. He further stressed on the need to fill up the lacuna in the present legislations providing for legal aid. He also reiterated the need to discuss every aspect of legal aid threadbare so that new perspectives might emerge and this convergence of new ideas revitalizes and enhances the efficacy of legal aid schemes.

An experience of Tihar Jail

Members of Legal Aid Society visited Tihar Jail to conduct a survey ascertaining whether juveniles were lodged in the jail or not. This initiative was taken in association with National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and Delhi Legal Services Authority under the order dated 8/2/2012 and 21/3/2012 of the Hon'ble High Court of Delhi in writ petition (civil) 8889 of 2011.

Orientation Programme by YP Foundation

February 21, 2012 
YP Foundation, a youth run and led organization¸ which is supporting and enabling young people to create programmes and influence policies in the areas of gender, sexuality, health, education, the arts and governance approached Legal Aid Society, Campus Law Centre to encourage students to support them in acheving in their objective as volunteers in their various programmes like VOICES- The School Project, The Right to Information Programme etc. The volunteers were basically required to work on issues of deprived and underprivileged class, visiting the slums for identification of their problems and thus mobilizing them and to help in fulfilling the admission procedural requirements of the underprivileged children basically trying to invoke their main motive of spreading literacy among maximum children as possible. Thus the orientation given by the team of YP Foundation proved to be of a great motivation for the students and encouraged many students to join their causes as volunteers and the team was also convinced that their sincerity and knowledge in law would prove to be a great asset for their organisation.
