No Honking Day

The Earth Saviours Foundation organised “NO HONKING CAMPAIGN” at ITO Delhi and Shankar Chowk Cyber City Road Gurgaon. Parineet Kaur and Bhavana Thakur, members of Gender Sensitization group, Legal Aid Society, participated with a large number of student volunteers from all over Delhi. During campaigning, the volunteers distributed pamphlets, stickers, displayed boards and slogans bearing “NO HONKING” slogans in order to convince them from minimizing the use of horn and spreading awareness about the harm caused by excessive honking thus creating Noise Pollution.

Gender Issues in Kali Basti

A slum is a densely populated urban area which is characterized by a generally low standard of living. A slum forms as homes are slowly subdivided into cramped tenement apartments, and the population becomes highly concentrated. At the same time, access to services like healthcare, fresh food, and basic sanitation may start to become restricted, creating filth.

With a view of analysing the gender issues of present day slums, the Gender Sensitization group of the Legal Aid Society visited the Kali Basti , a slum located in Uttam Nagar East, Delhi. The objective of the visit was to identify the issues prevalent in the slum with regard to gender specific roles.

An understanding of household gender sensitivities is crucial in demonstrating issues related to equality. Programmes to encourage girl child education have emphasised how important education is as a tool for promoting gender equality. Pushpa, 15, who lives with her mother and two brothers, revealed that she had to quit her studies due to financial constraints. “Financially, there were issues at home and my parents were not able to afford my education,” she said. She had a younger brother whose education was considered more important. Preference was given to the male child as there’s a deeply entrenched belief in India that the men in the family have to be educated first as he is considered as bread winner of family. Her elder brother is the sole bread winner in the family and in the course of our interview, she expressed a desire to learn a few skills which would enable her to find a job, and support her family.

An Experience of Nari Niketan

Volunteers of Gender Sensatization group of Legal Aid Society went to the Nari Niketan of NGO Earth Saviours, Vasant Kunj. The functioning of the Nari Niketan is straight forward. It provides women with employment and regular income of Rs 2000 a month. Their work mainly includes maintaining the kitchen and taking care of the premises.  The Earth Saviours organization provides  transport facility to the women considering the location of the Nari Niketan, which is far away from the main city. Volunteers interacted with them regarding their lives and problems they faced. 

Kali Basti....

Members of Slum subgroup of Legal Aid Society went on a fact finding trip to Kali Basti Juggi, Uttam Nagar, Delhi.  The Kali Basti was established after displacement of people, around 25 years ago, from Karol Bagh area.  Government allotted house of 12.5 yards to each family on rent, which is around 800/- and according to different legislation including Slum Rehabilitation Act of Delhi, the government has obligation to provide basic amenities to the slum area.

We are free is a tradition,a venture of theatre as well as the gelling of the team for this venture was charismatic especially with the students of 1st year who as just entrants into law,We discussed fundamental principles and legal issues to prepare the format for presentation and then technical touch was given for making it entertaining.

Are we free ??? Wake up call for all of us

After several decades, students of Campus Law Centre took a path-breaking initiative of exploring the domain of “Theatre”.

The expression “freedom” being the genesis of our liberties and rights, which were given to us by nature and later on recognized by our Constitution. Whenever any individual exercises his liberty, he understands it as a term without any barriers. This misconception is highly illusionary on part of the individual.
