Are we free ??? Wake up call for all of us

October 21, 2011
After several decades, students of Campus Law Centre took a path-breaking initiative of exploring the domain of “Theatre”.

The expression “freedom” being the genesis of our liberties and rights, which were given to us by nature and later on recognized by our Constitution. Whenever any individual exercises his liberty, he understands it as a term without any barriers. This misconception is highly illusionary on part of the individual.

The moment we exercise our liberty, an unknown term i.e. duty comes into operation. It’s our duties which lay down the scope of our liberties. The freedom for which our forefathers fought is no longer relevant for our present generation. Looking at the present scenario, we come to conclusion that we have taken wrong route for the upliftment of our nation. The situation has worsened for most of the people in our country except a handful people who are exercising freedom that too in exorbitant extent without any restrictions.

The duties are not restricted to oneself but it extends to the society as well. As it well that:

"One person’s freedom ends where another person’s freedom begins".

The play emphasized various dimensions of the society. It started from pre-independent era highlighting the situation of farmers, freedom fighters and atrocities of Britishers. Also, how colonial authorities curbed the voices of our revolutionaries. Then, it takes us to post-independence era. And the situation after 64 years of independence. Still, we are struggling to secure the basic needs, which gives us hope of making our life secure and dignified like education, food and shelter.

A family with four members (father, mother, son and daughter),the head of the family is Mr.Verma; who comes across many difficulties for admitting his son to engineering college. Further, his worries of getting the daughter married.

For the marriage of daughter, his wife insists him to arrange the wealth for dowry; this compels Verma ji to take bribe. By this the play showcased an open secret of marriage system, as it is no longer a getting together of two souls but merely a business in which trading is done by buying of a bride and selling of a groom. Moreover, Marriages are no longer written in heaven rather it is written in cheques.

Then, characters of the play touches that sphere of our society ,which is clothed in corruption and nepotism from head to toe i.e. government department.Verma ji as a part of this department is also corrupt not by his will but because of sheer compulsion. The play created the awareness of right to information given under Right to Information Act, 2005, which makes every dept. answerable for its activities. Also, the way by which government officials interpret the provisions to hide their corrupt practices by neither telling a truth nor a lie, but half truth.

Subsequently, the play shows how the definition of love has become far from heart and near to practicality as all of us would agree, now, the economics dictates terms to our emotions. Falling in love is for those who are employed and not for those who are unemployed (being victims of our nation’s economic policies) because in a love affair, man has to bear the cost of love as well.

At the verge of its end the play introduced us to the hollow life of so-called cream layer, to whom the meaning of our freedom struggle is nothing, they are more conscious to the western way of life rather than understanding the critical situation through our society and country is passing through. For them the relevant question is what???????  Is happening in West then the issues of corruption, famine and farmer suicide in our nation. In the play, this was depicted by a group of youngsters who were occupied with alcohol, smack and cigarettes.

Still the issue prevails:

Are we free????

The entire CLC was in jovial mood and students were celebrating and cherishing this long awaited moment. It was a dream come true situation for the CLC family. The whole auditorium was jam-packed with the students. Everyone could feel the vibes of energy.
