INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
March 17, 2012
Venue: Conference Centre, University of Delhi

LEGAL AID
CATALYST FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

Legal Aid Society

Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi

Theme of the Conference

The concept of legal aid encompasses a broad range of activities that aim at social advancement by creatively utilizing the instrument of law. Legal profession, the way it is currently practiced and organized, is primarily concerned with the improvement of the quality of legal services rather than ensuring equitable and even distribution of legal services. That is where the concept of legal aid finds its relevance—it strives to make law relevant to the masses who are somehow left out and exist below the visibility line of law in action.
It has been widely accepted that the governance idyllic “Justice to All” cannot be realized in its true perspective without legal aid in any legal system howsoever efficient and effective it may be. The Preamble of our Constitution guarantees “Justice” to all which mandates our state instrumentalities to initiate and establish a mechanism for providing it to those for whom it is still an unfulfilled dream. This sentiment has also been echoed in many UN resolutions as well. The overall development of the society, which we all cherish, cannot be achieved by excluding legal development as it is the fundamental element for uplifting all in a progressive state.
Realizing the need of legal aid and being mindful of the challenges faced by the people working in this field, the idea behind the conference is to organize a forum for debate on various issues converging on the broad theme of Legal Aid. The objective is to bring together various stakeholders of the legal aid movement and spawn a meaningful dialogue amongst them so that it facilitates future partnerships. Needless to say, the exercise would also result in generation and consolidation of literature on the subject.
