Report on the play 'Daakiya Drugs Laaya'

Daakiya drugs laaya is a journey from law to justice, from simple to complex and from hatred to love. It encompasses the role of free legal aid in delivering justice to the needy. Law students, lawyers or anyone else from the legal fraternity has a duty towards the society. But in today’s scenario this duty is being ignored because of greed. Greed ultimately feeds the ego and there is love no more. Whereas some sense of social responsibility not only caters others but one’s own being as well. This concern for society is an essential faculty of human character. Those who feel it and put in their efforts to make the society a better place, ultimately find their own selves replenished.

On stage

Some hiccups, few movement faults, music suddenly stops but DAAKIYA DRUGS LAAYA on stage gets unimaginable applaud. Monkeys frightened audience, reach on stage and the Gandhian principles are depicted. Then comes beauty— the national flower lotus, order in chaos. We are beautiful and strong as well, the national animal and the national emblem showing strength of India. Here enters the life enjoyed by Indians and the longing as they yearn for God. The choreography completes.

The play stages the two Indias, one which is modern, rich enough to be modern and the poor or backward India. But asHon’ble Justice Dr.Murlidhar quoted “If law has to take any side, it must take the side of the poor”. In the first scene the innocent untouched life of Ravinder through his house was shown.

The second scene was about the dichotomy of choice that youth in India is facing today. This dichotomy enters the sphere of their personal lives and not merely on professional front. But then those sensitive enough still concern themselves for greater goals. Here, Aditi feels concerned for poor Ravinder, her maid’s son while she is caught in her personal life problems too.

Faculty of Law, University of Delhi— its culture and beauty is showcased in the third and fourth scene. People with varying backgrounds from across the country study here. Even when different in many respects there is a thread of law studentship which binds them together. In fact it is the role of lawyers in society when conceived by the law students binds them together, again a greater responsibility, responsibility towards justice, towards their country.

No sooner than they feel responsible for justice there enters the element of uncertainty towards their future and it derails the complete social thought. Now they find excuses for not contributing towards the betterment of society (of course through legal aid).

The next scenes of the play portray the role of legal aid in ensuring justice to the poor. Article 39A of the Constitution of India speaks of “Equal justice and free legal aid”. It was shown through the play that this casts a duty on the people of India, and in particular the legal fraternity to work towards this greater goal transcending the boundaries of personal interest.

The last scene is a courtroom drama where law students have become lawyers in the course of a single criminal trial. Ravinder is saved from false accusations by Aditi. The pace and perception of justice in India is changed by the new legal minds. The play concludes with a melodious message to take up law as a profession and work towards the betterment of society, nonetheless through tools like LEGAL AID.
