Volunteers of Gender Sensatization group of Legal Aid Society went to the Nari Niketan of NGO Earth Saviours, Vasant Kunj. The functioning of the Nari Niketan is straight forward. It provides women with employment and regular income of Rs 2000 a month. Their work mainly includes maintaining the kitchen and taking care of the premises. The Earth Saviours organization provides transport facility to the women considering the location of the Nari Niketan, which is far away from the main city. Volunteers interacted with them regarding their lives and problems they faced.
The women shared their experiences after spending some time with us. We talked about various things like- the right age to get married, number of children, health issues, etc. We also gave them some information about the benefits they can get under government schemes relating to the birth of a girl child, the “LADLI Yojna”.
All in all, the journey was worth every bit. Such ventures must be taken forward and such steps must be taken to ensure the necessary links that need to be created between and among institutions. There would be nothing more satisfying if one can help in directing people to the places meant for redressal. It is the least one can do as students. We hope that will be the first of many, many such endeavours.
I appreciate your effort of spreading awareness among those confined and isolated from the outside world. Congratulations! I have worked closely with the inmates of the nari niketan. It will be great if we could share our experiences of interaction with them.
