Orientation Programme for new members of Legal Aid Society

The orientation programme for the members of the Legal Aid Society of the Campus Law Centre for the academic session 2012-13 was held on 31st August 2012 at the Seminar Hall. The Legal Aid Society comprises of about 500 students and as such, it is one of the largest and the most vibrant societies of the Campus Law Centre. The function that started at 1:30 pm was graced by the Professor-in-charge of the Campus Law Centre- Prof. J.L Kaul, Dr. Raman Mittal (the Convener of the Legal Aid Society) and Sri Mithun ( who happens to one of the most active Legal Aid Society member of his time).

Prof. J.L Kaul initiated the proceedings on a fiery note with his bravura performance. He discussed the opportunities that the institution provided to the students, the part where they lacked and the challenges they faced from the National Law Schools with their 5 year integrated LLB programme. He reminded the students of the massive task that lay ahead of them and emphasized the importance of being active in co-curricular events to help them accomplish their dreams in future. Stressing on the work done by Legal Aid Society in the past academic session, he dubbed the society as a phenomenal success. He laid special emphasis on the innovative system that was introduced in the society last year in which the society was divided into several groups which dealt with different laws for e.g. The Right to Information Group, the Prison Group, the Environment Group etc. Congratulating Dr. Mittal for his past success he urged the Legal Aid Society to keep up the good work and continue to be a vital contributor to the institution's overall success.

Sri Mithun mesmerized the students with an emotional address. He talked about his involvement in the society, the way it grew and the various obstacles they overwhelmed during this journey to being one of the most attractive societies of the Campus Law Centre. He mentioned the importance of participating in the activities of the society and pointed out the relevance of the society in the academic life of Campus Law Centre. He also informed the students how the Legal Aid Society had undertaken a fact finding trip to Vasant Kunj last year on the 'Menace of Illegal Mobile Phone Towers' in the residential areas and the way they had accidentaly pioneered a crusade against this issue of phenomenal proportions. His address received a wide applause from the students.

Dr. Raman Mittal came started his energetic address with a catchy power point presentation for the students, briefing them about Legal Aid Society. He informed the students about the vision and mission of the Legal Aid Society, the programmes the society had carried out in the past academic session and what the society held in store for the students. The entire audience was perplexed by the range of activities         (National and International Conferences, Internship Programmes, Slum and Prison Visits, Dramatics etc.) successfully carried out by the Legal Aid Society in the past year. He unveiled another innovative organizational structure for the Society this year that would comprise of the Fact finding group and the Research Group instead of the specific law based groups that the society had in it's previous session. The aim was to help the students focus on their particular interests which would be ensured through issue based participation. He also threw light on the democratic structure of the society which has a core team open for select members who took active part in the society's events and contributed to the functioning and growth of the society and the Legal Aid movement. Any member of the society could be inducted in the core team based on his work. The society is headed by the Convener - Dr. Raman Mittal and a few of his colleagues along with the Student convener Sumit Sonkar. Dr. Mittal also informed the audience that Legal Aid Society would also set up a Legal Clinic this year to impart free legal aid and the members would be inducted as paralegals for the same after being imparted the relevant training. He also outlined a few other activities that would be carried out in this Session.

There was an overwhelming response from the student members who widely applauded Dr. Mittal's adress. Many of the students who had not registered themselves turned up to Prof. Mittal for the same. The revamped structure of the society and the innovative programmes introduced this year was appealing to a majority of the members, which turned this induction programme into an ideal beginning for the current academic session.
